Details
In this solo exhibition, Kristina Salinas generates a pictorial study on the space that exists, both representational and allegorical, between herself and her roots in Mexico.
Salinas traces her paternal lineage in a regional journey from her home in San Antonio, Texas through her birthplace of Laredo, Texas and ultimately ending at her ancestral home of Candela, Coahuila, Mexico.
In traveling and researching this project, the artist collected images along the route in an attempt to express her cultural identity. By exhibiting her work, she aims to shed light on our shared cultural experiences and strike recognition between herself and the viewer.
The exhibition title is a play on Cognitive Dissonance, the term which describes the resultant internal conflict from holding polarizing beliefs within oneself. Salinas acknowledges the duality that exists between herself as a contemporary artist in San Antonio as compared to the ways of life of her relatives in Laredo and Candela, begging the question: what has been lost and what was gained?
Salinas acknowledges the beautiful truth in our human capacity, as descendants of immigrants, for acknowledging and honoring the path our families walked, the risks taken and the complexities of cultural identity derived from that journey.
Please note that the Central Library is closed on Sundays.
