CENTRO TAKES OVER THE STREETS WITH DOWNTOWN TOGETHER

SAN ANTONIO, TX - The leaves may be taking their time, but downtown San Antonio is ready for fall. On Thursday, October 22, Centro San Antonio invites the entire community to kick off the season with Downtown Together: The Great Street Takeover, a new celebration turning downtown streets into places to gather, play, and connect.

Presented in partnership with AIA San Antonio and architecture firm Gensler, the event brings together an event inspired by Park(ing) Day, originally founded by Rebar, and an annual downtown pickleball tournament. Beginning at 10 a.m., W. Houston Street between Soledad and N. Flores will become a destination for creativity, with activities evolving throughout the day.

The celebration draws inspiration from Park(ing) Day, an international movement that temporarily transforms ordinary parking spaces into public parks and gathering places. Centro is building on that idea with a distinctly San Antonio experience, inviting residents from across the city to see downtown’s streets in a new way, and help start a new fall tradition.

“Fall brings a special kind of warmth to downtown San Antonio, even as the weather cools,” said Trish DeBerry, president and CEO of Centro San Antonio. “It’s families spending time together, neighbors meeting someone new, and local businesses welcoming people through their doors. Downtown Together celebrates that spirit and the partners who make it possible.”

The day continues with Gensler’s 4th Annual Pickleball Challenge, featuring open play from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m., followed by tournament action from 2:30 to 6:00 p.m. The challenge brings friendly competition to the streets while raising funds for this year’s beneficiary, CAM (Christian Assistance Ministries). Attendees can support CAM by donating nonperishable Thanksgiving food items, making a monetary contribution, or purchasing raffle tickets for a chance to win exciting prizes. All raffle proceeds benefit CAM. Whether joining the tournament, cheering from the sidelines, or checking out the many Downtown Together exhibits, visitors will have plenty of ways to take part.

The celebration carries into the evening as Centro partners with Downtown West for Journey West & Alamo Music’s Guitar Wars, returning for its second year from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. The neighborhood event invites visitors to explore participating businesses, enjoy live music, and take advantage of special deals. Plus, parking after 5:00 p.m. is free at Frost Tower, Alamo Music, and all city-owned garages and parking lots thanks to Downtown Thursday.
