Music from St. Mark’s presents: Fauré Requiem
Music from St. Mark’s presents Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem on November 5, at 4:00 pm, celebrating the Feast of All Saints’. Sung by the choir of St. Mark’s, the work is scored for soprano and baritone soloists, choir, orchestra and organ.
Written between 1887 and 1890, Fauré’s Requiem in D minor is one of his best-known works. Fauré described his Requiem as having ‘a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.’ The work is an expression of light with some of the most beautiful melodies in choral repertoire. The Requiem will be contrasted with three other choral pieces: Tomás Luis de Victoria’s O quam gloriosum (O how glorious is the kingdom), Arvo Pärt’s The Beatitudes, and Richard Shephard’s Never weather-beaten sail.
